TYPE 4 BEARINGS

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS

The type 4 rudder bearings have been designed to fit GRP/COMPOSITE and ALUMINIUM rudder shafts and incorporate up to 3 rows of barrel rollers.

100 % WATERTIGHT

- V seals are located on the upper and lower plates to protect perfectly the rudder bearing.

- O-ring seals insure a proper watertightness between the rudder bearing and the rudder stock, and prevent any electrolyses occuring.

RESISTANT TO CORROSION

- The body and inner race of each bearing are machined from solid class 5086 or 6082 aluminium and are protected by 15-20µ thick anodisation.

SUPPRESS ELECTROLYSES

-In order to avoid any electrolytic problem in a carbon fibre hull, the lower plate of the lower bearing is always machined out of acetal (POM).

STAINLESS STEEL SLEEVES ARE NOT NECESSARY

LIGHT RUDDER BEARINGS

- As these bearings are modular, the same diameter of shaft may incorporate different rows of barrel rollers according to the calculated loads.

-A Lightweight version for racing boats can be ordered on request.

- Type 4 bearings will accept +/- 3.5 degree rudder shaft deflection.

TYPE 4 BEARINGS INSTALLATION

  • Lightly grease the surface of the stock before fitting in order not to damage O-rings.
  • If the stock is equipped with sleeves, make sure these have chamfered edges.
  • Do not use any resin, gel coat or any sort of glue or paint on the upper and lower plates of the type 4 rudder bearings.
  • Do not paint or antifouling the seals.
  • Our rudder bearings leave the factory lubricated and ready to install. No further maintenance is required.

PRINCIPLE

Setup of a 40.32.12 bearing in its composite housing.

Tapered Type 4 rudder bearings are designed to fit our aluminium or GRP housings. The major advantages of this configuration are :
  • 100% watertight installation.
  • Ease of installation.
  • Once the housing has been laminated or welded the rudder bearing has just to be bolted to the housing.
    • Installation of lower bearing can be done from outside of the boat.
  • Security of installation :
    • With its conical shape, the rudder bearing cannot go up.
  • Easy maintenance :
    • Rudder bearing only has to be unbolted and dropped from its housing for maintenance.
    • The rudder stock can be dropped from the boat with the lower bearing.
  • Note : Flange can be made on request.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR INSTALLATION OF GRP HOUSING
  • Remove Peel Ply from GRP housing.
  • Position the housing on the deck ( or hull ).
  • When laminating the housing, place the rudder bearing into the housing to make sure the housing keeps its original shape.
  • Do not laminate the upper part of the housing (fixation bolts side).
  • Slide the rudder bearing in the housing and tighten the fixating bolts.

NOTE

The Type 4 rudder bearings are shipped with the seal carrier on the opposite side of the fixating bolts untightened (as shown on picture A). After installing the bearing into its housing, do not forget to tighten all the bolts of this seal carrier to expand the outer o-ring seal (as shown on picture B).

COMPLEMENTARY PARTS

RETAINING RINGS

Specifically designed to carry heavy axial loads, retaining rings secure the rudder in position.

These rings are located on the rudder shaft against the rudder bearing inner race and are made of 5086 Aluminium, Anodized class 15.

FLANGES

Type 4 bearings are supplied with two seal carriers. The top seal carrier can be enlarged as a flange for to install the bearing on the deck or in an aluminium housing.

COMPOSITE HOUSINGS

Welded or laminated into the hull these housings allow positionning and fastening of the bearing.

They do exist for each size of Type 3 or 4 bearing, and they can be supplied in GRP or Aluminium.

NOTE : Make sure the structure of your hull is strong enough to support the radial loads created by the rudder shaft.

WARNING: THESE BEARINGS ARE ADJUSTED IN OUR WORKSHOP. DO NOT DISMANTLE THEM!
